Elizabeth Arden

Elizabeth Arden - the girl who dreamed of being 'the richest little women in the world'

Elizabeth Arden was one of the most successful female entrepreneurs of all time. Her sense of style, rigid business acumen and innovative ideas led her to the top of the beauty industry, and decades after her death her brand is still going strong. This is the biography of Elizabeth Arden.
The 'richest little woman in the world'

Originally named Florence Nightingale Graham, Elizabeth Arden was born in 1878 in a small town in Ontario, Canada called Woodbridge. From a young age, Arden showed the entrepreneurial spirit by declaring to her parents that she wanted to be, “The richest little woman in the world” when she grew up, she just didn’t know how to at that point in her life. Arden then suffered a devastating loss when her mother died when she was 6 from tuberculosis. She continued to live in Woodbridge with her father and siblings until she moved to Toronto to study nursing, inspired by her iconic given name.
From Nursing to Beauty

After a short stint in nursing school, she moved back home after deciding that a career in health care was not for her, but she was more interested in skin care and beauty. She began to experiment with developing a face cream in her kitchen, but after a while was forced to get a job by her father. She worked as a receptionist and bank teller before she decided to move to New York in search of her big break in the beauty business.

Arden (who was still going by her given names) eventually found a job as a low-paid cashier in a skin treatment parlor. After begging her boss to let her learn how to do beauty treatments (with no extra pay), Arden developed an excellent reputation with the clientele for her beauty and selling skills and was soon able to partner with her boss to open her own beauty parlor.
The Beginning of Elizabeth Arden

She named her salon “Mrs. Elizabeth Arden” and quickly took this name as her new persona. She decorated her salon with regal furnishings and antique treasures and quickly developed a following with the New York elite.

From there, Arden developed a whole line of cosmetics and beauty treatments that were marketed to the women of New York, at first by mail order and then through her beauty parlor. This was groundbreaking, as cosmetics use for everyday was considered “low class” and reserved for prostitutes at that time. However, Elizabeth Arden managed to bring cosmetics mainstream and successfully created an empire by selling to middle and upper class women to help them look younger and more professional.

The Empire of Elizabeth Arden

Even throughout the Great Depression, Arden managed to expand her business and continue to enjoy profits and success. Her face care and cosmetics lines were constantly evolving and she even created a best-selling perfume Blue Grass. Other popular perfumes created since have been Red Door, 5th Avenue, Sunflowers and Green Tea. Her empire spread throughout Europe and is now a name that is recognized worldwide.

During these years her personal life didn’t enjoy the same success that her business did. She had two failed marriages and never had any children. She kept working into the latter years of her life until her death at age 87 in 1966. Her empire was not mentioned in her will, and after many changes of owners it is now owned by FFI, who bought it for an estimated $225 million.

The Intriguing Life of Yves Saint Laurent

With over four decades of undisputed success, the Yves Saint Laurent brand is one that is synonymous with elegance, class and innovation. With beginnings in haute couture, the Yves Saint Laurent name has now blossomed into a full portfolio of fashion and accessory lines including ready-to-wear men and women’s fashion, sunglasses, cosmetics, handbags, shoes and Yves Saint Laurent perfume.

Born to Design

Yves Saint Laurent was born and raised in Oran, Algeria with his two sisters by his father (a prominent business man) and his mother, who has been credited with passing on her love of fashion to Yves. His parents were well known and respected amongst the elite in Oran, and Yves grew up as an upper class child. At the age of 15, his fashion sketches were noticed by the editor-in-chief of Vogue after entering the International Wool Secretariat competition, and Yves was encouraged to study at the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture in Paris. Yves was only there for a few months before quitting, but after his fashion sketches won first prize in the International Wool Secretariat competition later that year, he was hired on the spot by Christian Dior.

The Difficult Years

Saint Laurent worked very closely with Dior up until his untimely death in 1957. Earlier that year, Dior had named Yves as his successor, so at the tender age of 21 he found himself as the head designer of Dior. His debut collection the Ligne Trapeze (featuring the iconic trapeze dress) won rave reviews, and Saint Laurent steadily built up his design reputation working for Dior.
In 1960, Yves was enlisted to fight in the French army and after severe hazing from fellow soldiers, suffered a nervous breakdown and was sent to a mental hospital. It was there that he found out that the house of Dior had fired him (due to his beatnik inspired collection that flopped earlier that year) and went on to endure being given large doses of sedatives and electroshock therapy at the notoriously sadistic hospital.
When he was finally released, Yves returned back to Paris to start his own fashion house with the financial backing and support of his partner, Pierre Berge, in 1962. The house of Yves Saint Laurent astounded the fashion elite with innovations such as le Smoking (the iconic smoking suit for women), the reefer coat, the peasant top, sheer blouses and the jumpsuit amongst others.

Sweet Success

As YSL’s success grew, the house ventured into new territory by designing classic fragrances such as Y (1964), Pour Homme (1971), Rive Gauche(1971), Opium (1977), Kouros (1981), Paris (1983). Newer offerings such as M7 and Nu were released when Tom Ford stepped in as head designer for YSL in 1999, but nothing comparable to the iconic fragrances that were first released by Saint Laurent himself.
After being awarded the title of Commander in the French Legion of Honor by President Jacques Chirac, Yves Saint Laurent distanced himself from his fashion empire and lived a reclusive life at his homes in Morocco and Normandy with his partner Berge. Yves Saint Laurent passed away in 2008 at his home in Paris, and his funeral was attended by the political, fashion and media elite. One of the most intriguing and successful designers of the past century, the Yves Saint Laurent name will always represent true fashion innovation.

Ralph Lauren - an American classic

One of the most legendary American designers of our time, Ralph Lauren is a name synonymous with classic style, simple elegance, and preppy chic. From what started as humble beginnings has now become a worldwide phenomenon, with a range of products including women and men’s clothing, baby wear, children’s wear, RL Home, Ralph Lauren perfume and even a restaurant based in the heart of Chicago. Ralph Lauren is no longer a brand of clothing, but a way of life.

A star is born

Ralph Lauren (born Ralph Lifshitz) was born and raised in the Bronx, New York, by his parents who had emigrated from Belarus. He grew up in a working class neighborhood with his three brothers, mother and father (a house painter). While they were by no means poor, Ralph knew the value of a dollar from an early age and was blessed with a steadfast determination to make money and be successful. By his early teens, he was working after school jobs so that he could save up to buy expensive suits.

The beginning of Polo

His love of smart dress continued to grow, and he eventually went to study business at the City University of New York. After two years, Lauren decided to leave the program and after a two year stint in the army, he went back to focusing on men’s fashion. Working at the time manufacturer A. Rivetz & Co., Lauren ventured into design for the first time, creating a tie that was wider that the ones currently on the market. In 1967, Ralph Lauren found a financial backer and launched his own neckwear boutique, where he sold his own wide tie designs along with other brands. He named his tie collection Polo, and so began the launch of his fashion empire.

From suits to bed sheets

The Ralph Lauren brand catapulted to success in the 80s, starting with his men’s collection that introduced the iconic power suit to the market. Although many other fashion houses were doing power suits at the time, people couldn’t get enough of the Polo image - wealth, sophistication and class. His clothing was made of the highest quality of materials, boasted precision tailoring, and had a timeless look that was unique to the Polo brand. Casual wear was also a big seller for the RL brand, epitomizing the preppy chic look that was popular in the 80s. The brand went on to launch women’s wear and Ralph Lauren home – bed sheets, towels and furniture all with the classic American style that the Polo/Ralph Lauren brand was known for.

The Polo brand expands

After 42 years in business, the Ralph Lauren brand is still going strong. The newer additions to the RL family include shoes, baby and children’s wear, a funkier casual line called Rugby and the very successful fragrance line. After its launch in 1978, Polo for men is still a top seller, while the women’s line has numerous successes such as Romance, Notorious, Pure Turquoise and Love.

From a line of wide ties to a $900 million dollar empire, Ralph Lauren has achieved worldwide domination with his brand based on American casual chic. A visionary designer with a sharp business sense, Ralph Lauren has successfully created a timeless brand that is pure class - without the flash. A visionary designer who has captured the essence of the American spirit in everything from his clothing to his perfumes, Ralph Lauren is an American fashion icon

HUGO BOSS

Today, Hugo Boss is a well known global fashion empire with a chain of shops in 102 countries, more than 5000 stores and an annual turnover of over half a billion dollars. However, it was not always so good for the man whose company started one of the world's most fashionable men's clothing lines and now also features Hugo Boss cologne and other men's accessories.

From bankruptcy to Baldessarini

Hugo Boss started his clothing company in 1923 in Metzingen, where it is still based, a small town south of Stuttgart, Germany. However, due to the economic climate in Germany at the time Boss was forced into bankruptcy in 1930. Undeterred, Hugo set up a new business and in 1931 became a member of the Nazi party. With the rise of Adolf Hitler in 1933, Boss's business also began to prosper as he became the official supplier of uniforms to the SA and SS guards.

Buy Hugo Boss cologne and perfumesWith the defeat of Germany in 1945, Boss was charged with being sympathetic to the Nazi cause and was denied the right to vote in Germany and ordered to pay a fine. He died in 1948 but his business survived and in 1953, with the demand for SS uniforms gone, the business turned its hand to making suits. The timing was perfect, as the male fashion industry was just establishing itself and through the 60's and 70's Boss suits became the benchmark for quality, fashionable menswear.

In 1985 the company was floated on the stock exchange and the majority shareholder is now the Marzotto textile group. In 1993, exactly 70 years after it was founded, Hugo Boss launched its first fragrance, thus creating a division of the company that has steadily grown to be an important area of business for the company.

Today there are two main clothing lines - Hugo Boss, Hugo. The line Baldessarini, named after the chief designer Werner Baldessarini (who resigned in 2002), was discontinued after the release of the spring/summer collection of 2007. The Baldessarini fragrance line however will continue.

Apart from suits, over the years Hugo Boss has branched out into shirts, ties, tuxedos, underwear, shoes, sunglasses including a range of mens cologne and womens fragrances.
